After hearing the weather warnings all day, at around 10 pm on February 5th our
worst fears became reality. The first of 2 tornadoes pushed through Middle
Tennessee. The worst hit areas were predominately agriculture areas. Local
farmers received devastating losses, not only to their homes, barns and fencing
but many animals were injured or killed. VEA's board members' relationship with
local law enforcement agencies led them to call on us to assist with the animals
that were found injured in the tornado stricken areas. The first emergency run at
12:30 am was to bring in a red bone hound with a severely broken leg. We later
learned his name is Waylon, his home was destroyed and his owner was injured.
A second emergency run at 2:30 am brought in "Blue", a beagle mix that had
been buried beneath the rubble of a building, she was covered in blue paint. We
later learned her owner had not survived. A female white speckled dog was found
in the same area and has not been claimed. A beagle mix is also still unclaimed.
At 4 AM we were called to retrieve a horse that was injured and standing along
side Hwy 25. He was "shocky" and had received trauma to the head and
shoulder. His head required several stitches and a drainage tube. We later
learned his pasture buddy, Lightning did not survive.
On Wednesday, the day after the storm, several goats, a horse and a mule found
at large / injured and were brought in from Macon County, where the local
veterinarian's office was totally destroyed. These were all treated and claimed by
Friday after the storm.
The situation now is this, the owners of these animals lost almost - if not
everything - the owned. The last thing they should be concerned with is the
veterinary bills for the emergency treatment provided to these animals. All sorts of
emergency funds are available for the humans - but not for the animals. Please
help pay these bills for them.
